How to avoid break ins?

I recently ran into a bit of trouble and have to find a new home. I found one at a decent price me and my fiance can afford however it is not the nicest of neighborhoods. I was wondering for any insight on how to avoid trouble and break ins. I have a lot of nice things and I am just a little concerned about when were away. I have a pit bull and I am sure that will deter criminals slightly but anymore suggestions? Thank you.
